STARLING - The Mobile Starbucks In Jakarta

Starling is a word that people in Jakarta, the Capital of Indonesia, may have been accustomed. However, people from other region or overseas may be confused. You can't find the term in any dictionaries either.

The word refers to an abbreviation of two words coming from different languange. The first one is a famous brand and the later is Indonesian. The "STARLING" means STARBUCKS KELILING or in English means the MOBILE STARBUCKS.

Don't jump to a conclusion that the Starbucks has provided such service yet. The word does't come from them but from Jakarta's people as a nickname for mobile coffee sellers.

Usually, they use bicycles to crawl Jakarta's street. On their bike, they bring sachet instant coffee (definitely not from Starbucks) and water thermos. If you buy from them, they will stop in front of you and brew the coffee immediately.

Of course, the price is very cheap, only 1/20  compared to the "real" Starbucks coffee.

Here are the looks of the Jakarta STARLING, the Mobile Starbucks.

Cars and motorcycles are made with a purpose to make human being can reach their destination faster than if they walk. So, theoretically, riding (a motorcycle) or driving (a car) should be faster than walking.

In actual, it doesn't always happen like that. Many times riding or driving is much slower than when human uses their own foot to walk.

When someone rents their service, the umbrella boy will pass the umbrell to be used by the renter and will accompany them to the destination.

Most of umbrella boys bring only 1 umbrella withour reserve. So, in most case, while the renter is protected from pouring water, the boy must walk under the rain and get heavily wet. Only if the renter has a heart, they will ask the boy to walk under the same umbrella.

From their service, the umbrella boys will get few thousands rupiah (around 10-30 US Cents).

The opportunity of the job is sometimes very short. Depending on the length of the rain. If the rain stops, then usually umbrella boys will go home immediately.

An attractive street performance done by dancers in colorful costume. Lucky that I don't have to fly 4000-5000 Kilometers to Maluku just to see this dance. I can see it in my hometown.

The Function Of Chair On Jakarta Sidewalks (Besides For Pedestrian Resting Their Leg)

The Function Of Chair On Jakarta Sidewalks (Besides For Pedestrian Resting Their Leg)

Recently, Jakarta's Government decided to renovate lots of sidewalks. They set up wider and installed with a common facility like in developed country, chairs. For sure, it's intended for pedestrians who are tired walking to rest their legs before continuing their journey.

However, it seems some people find another function of the sidewalk chairs. It's quite convenient to rest their body and mind as well.
